Resident Activities

SW-Activities.jpgSouthwestern Veterans' Center provides a wide variety of trip opportunities for our Veterans throughout the year. Equipped with a fleet of four busses, three bus drivers, eight activities staff and nursing staff that accompany our veterans when needed on trips, our resources allow fun-filled trips that provide lasting memories for the veterans we serve.

Trip destinations throughout the year include: Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins games; Annual Sharing & Caring Boat Cruise on the Gateway Clipper; American Legion/VFW Post Visits; Elks Lodge visits; monthly Super Wal-Mart shopping trips; Sharpsburg and Lawrenceville Parades; Deer Lakes Park fishing trips; Kennywood Park; Pittsburgh Zoo; Pittsburgh Theaters and Museums, etc. SWVC takes pride in keeping our veterans active and engaged in community outings and events throughout the year.

Dementia Unit Program

The Activities Department provides a diverse activity program for those veterans residing on the dementia unit.  Activities programs are scheduled 9:30-11:30 a.m., 1:30-3:30 p.m. and 4:30-5:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturday’s provide the veterans a Morning Social and weekends allow for off-unit activities. Recently our facility added an additional Activities Assistant position providing our Dementia Unit with two Activities staff during the week that provides increased opportunities for activities. Activities programs offered include: Off-unit Mass; Music Therapy with Dan Wilhelm; Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 455; walking program; active games; Reminiscence; one-on-one visits; activity stations; relaxation group; ceramics; off-unit activities to include bingo, special events and entertainment; and courtyard activities. Our dementia unit programs are specific to our veterans needs and provide many opportunities for our veterans.
