COL Laura McHugh is the Deputy Adjutant General – Army for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She assumed her current duties on April 1, 2021.
She serves as the primary advisor to The Adjutant General on all matters pertaining to army operations and as the commander of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. She is responsible for the overall operational readiness for over 13,500 assigned members and for ensuring that they are trained and equipped to successfully accomplish their federal and state missions.
COL McHugh began her career by enlisting into the PAARNG in 1986 with the 1068th MP Company as a supply specialist. She has held numerous diverse positions throughout her 35 year career such as Commander of the Recruiting and Retention Battalion, Service Member and Family Support Division Chief, JFHQ State G1, 213thRegional Support Group Commander and she most recently served as the Chief of Staff for the Pennsylvania National Guard. In 2003 she deployed to the Middle East, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, as the 131st Transportation Company Commander.
She attended King’s College where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance and was commissioned through Scranton University’s ROTC program in 1991. She earned her Master of Science Degree in Leadership and Business Ethics from Duquesne University in May 2009 and graduated from the US Army War College in July 2015, where she earned a Master Degree in Strategic Studies.
COL McHugh’s awards include: the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary and Service Medals, Overseas Ribbon and numerous State awards. She also holds the basic parachutist and recruiting and retention basic badge.
She currently resides in Pine Grove, Pa. with her husband Dan, who is retired from the PA Army National Guard. They have two children, Brennan who serves as a Sergeant in the PA Army National Guard and a daughter Kaitlyn.
